AI Art

Is AI “Art”?

In Retrospect
Ever since I can remember, I have always loved to draw. I was inspired by the images I saw on television, especially animated movies. Throughout my school career, from elementary to college, I have always taken an art elective.

In undergrad, I would often wish that there was technology available to make it easier and less tedious to animate or draw. In a theory class on New Media, I wrote an essay on my thoughts of AI - which were mostly expressed as a fear of over-reliance towards AI, because what did I know about AI? Not much. It was 2013.

Turns out a lot can happen in a decade and my wish suddenly became within arms reach.

So, is AI “art”?
While there are many angles to look at this question, my opinion is this: I use AI as a tool to help bring my creative ideas to life and accelerate the process of creating. I am now able to customize almost any idea with the help of AI. I think it’s fascinating that such a powerful technology exists and can’t wait to see what the future holds for discovery and innovation.

Fragmented

'Fragmented' is a combination of photography self-portraiture, reinterpreted by a latent diffusion AI model (Stable Diffusion), bypassing traditional machine learning training through a hyper network, layered over with square "fragments" of the original photo. Its intension is to leave the viewer questioning what is the difference between AI and human art while providing an intrinsic look at our natural self and the AI interpretation which is redrawn and interpreted based on generative data.
